FAQ : Are there closed captions available in movie theaters?

Yes. There are two types of captioning being done in movie theaters currently. One is called the Rear Window system, which allows the person to watch the captioned movie with the aid of a device. More information on this system can be found at the movie access section of the National Center for Accessible Media website.

Tripod, at www.tripod.org, is another organization that arranges for motion pictures to be open captioned and shown in certain theaters. The movies are captioned in a style similar to that of a foreign subtitled film. Both websites carry listings of local movie theaters that screen captioned movies.
